![]() Strong keeps Flight in motion with twists of language and revelation. There’s a slightness to the plot - Flight occasionally feels padded out, with gratuitous, tacked-on scenes - but Strong milks the high moments, such as a quarrel that erupts during a game of cards. Strong is an exacting observer of families and their idiosyncrasies. The author recounts each character’s connection to Helen, their rivalries for her attention, folding planes of backstory into beautiful origami. There’s an easy rhythm here: She’s in no rush as she roves among her cast. Used with permission.Positive The Washington Post Strong’s slender but affecting new novel, Flight, ventures into this familiar terrain with a deft touch and an intuitive grasp of her characters. Help us to remember that we are “sparks in the dark,” sharing your love in what we say and in what we do. Thank you for your gifts of forgiveness, love, help, and hope. Let’s pray: Dear Jesus, thank you for giving us faith in you. And some of them will come to believe and shine with that love themselves. People will see Jesus’ love shining in us. The Holy Spirit will use what we say and what we do to help others come to faith and continue in faith. People everywhere need to know and believe the things we know and believe about Jesus. Walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8 ESV).īecause of Jesus, we are light, and we get to “walk as children of light.” We get to be “sparks in the dark.” There’s a lot of darkness all around us. They told us that he rose from the dead, and that he is getting a place in heaven ready - just for us! Now, we are “light”! Listen again: “At one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. They told us that Jesus died to forgive our sins. Our parents, pastors, and teachers told us about Jesus’ love. It was lonely and scary - a lot like being caught in the wilderness at midnight without a flashlight!īut then the Holy Spirit came and gave us the gift of faith. ![]() We had no hope that we would live with him and his forever family in heaven someday. The Bible talks a lot about darkness, but it’s usually describing a different kind of darkness. We can see a spark in the dark from a long distance! However, if we were standing on a high hill or small mountain - somewhere that the earth’s curvature didn’t interfere, we would be able to see the flashlight/flame flickering from nearly 30 miles! That’s a long distance! But it’s true. After that, the curvature of the earth would block the light. ![]() Our eyes would pick out the light from this candle/flashlight for about three miles. If we were in the dark at midnight, far, far out in the wilderness, far away from any town or city lights, from how far away do you think we could see this candle/flashlight? (Let volunteers speculate.) Even a little light will work! (Light the candle or turn on the flashlight you brought along.) ? (Again, let volunteers comment, this time about their feelings.)ĭark places can sometimes be exciting or fun - for a short while. What is the darkest place you have ever gone? Has anyone ever been camping away from city or town lights on a moonless night? Has anyone ever visited a cave deep inside the earth when your guide turned out the lights? What other very dark places have you experienced? (Let volunteers describe the dark places they have visited.) Also, mark Ephesians 5:8 in your Bible so you can easily find it and read it to the children. Before you begin, find a light source to use - a small flashlight or candle and matches.
